Tour Description:
The calving season in February is one of the most captivating times of the year, especially in regions like the Serengeti and Ndutu in Tanzania. During this period, which typically peaks around February, thousands of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles give birth to their young.
For the wildebeest, this is a particularly crucial time, as the calving season ensures the survival of the next generation of the herd. Newborn calves are often seen taking their first steps on the lush, fresh grasslands. The timing is essential as it ensures that the young animals have the best chance of survival, with abundant food and the safety of numbers. The sheer number of births during this period creates an incredible spectacle on the plains before flying to Zanzibar.

It forms the center of an annual migratory cycle that includes up to 3000 elephants, 25,000 wildebeest and 30,000 zebras. Here you’ll also experience some incredible bird life with over 550 bird’s species found in the park including Ashy Starling, Yellow-collared Lovebird, and Rufus-tailed Weaver. The lush grasses are full of ground birds like Northern White-bellied Bustard and both Red-necked and Yellow-necked Francolins and many others. Then, after a delicious lunch we’ll make our way to Marera Valley Lodge for dinner and overnight relaxation.
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Feb 08.2026: Karatu – Serengeti National Park (Ndutu)
After breakfast, we will head to the Lake Ndutu region, situated in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a sublime landscape of the southern Serengeti ecosystem. The drive takes approximately 2 hours, taking us across the beautiful landscape of the rift valley lake Ndutu. Alkaline like most of the other Rift Valley is frequently inhabited by a wide array of wildlife. Enjoy your packed picnic lunch before proceeding with game drive. The safari guide will often find a safe and scenic location with a good view of wildlife to spread out the picnic
With appetites sated, we undertake our game drive in the Ndutu region. The majority of the wildebeest migration can normally be found on the short-grass plains from December to April. After the late afternoon game drive, you will drive to Kenzan Tented Camp for dinner and overnight at Ndutu
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
- Hotel: Luxury Tent
- Approximate travel time: 3hrs
Feb 09.2026: Ndutu Southern Serengeti Wildebeest Calving
(Balloon Ride Safari will be optional)
After a hearty breakfast, we will head out to enjoy a full day’s game drive in Ndutu. We will explore the range of different habitats found here including swamps, woodland and savannah. With luck, you will see vast crowds of wildebeest, zebra and antelope, sometimes stretching to the horizon. The sound of the wildebeest gently mooing is hauntingly beautiful.
In February, many of the female wildebeest give birth to their young, dropping over half a million young in this incredible act of synchronized birthing. The grass provides little cover and the young are easy pickings for a variety of predators (cheetah, lion, hyena, and leopard). Wildebeest calves can run minutes after they are born and within 3 days they are normally strong enough to keep up with the herd. After a full day’s exploration, you will return to Kenzani Tented Camp for dinner and overnight at Ndutu.
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
- Hotel: Luxury Tent
- Approximate travel time: Zero
Feb 10.2026: Ngorongoro Crater – Karatu
We have an early breakfast at our hotel at 6:00 am before departing to the heart of wildness in Tanzania – the Ngorongoro Crater. We’ll descend over 600 meters into the crater to view wildlife. Supported by a year-round water supply and food, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area supports a vast variety of animals, which includes herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo and giant African elephants. Another big draw to this picturesque national park, is its dense population of predators, which includes lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs and the ever-elusive leopard. We’ll visit Lake Magadi, a large but shallow alkaline lake in the southwestern corner, which is one of the main features of the crater. A large number of flamingos, hippos and other water birds can usually be seen here. Later after an extensive game drive we head to Karatu where you’ll spend overnight and have dinner at Marera Valley Lodge.

Here we’ll see the Zanzibar doors famous for their unique architectural tradition. In old times the door was traditionally the first part of the house to be built and signifies the status of the owner, the wealthier and more respected the owner of the house, the larger and more meticulously carved the door front would be. The Stone Town tour will end in the afternoon, after which we will continue through the countryside to the spice plantations. Things To Pack:
1. Layered, versatile clothing
Wondering what to wear in Tanzania? While Tanzania is swelteringly hot for much of the year, it can also get very cold, plus you’ll need different types of clothes for different activities. Going on safari? You’ll need lightweight clothing in neutral colors. Want to trek Mount Kilimanjaro? You’ll need plenty of warm weather hiking gear. Want to relax on the beaches on Zanzibar? You’ll need swimwear, but you’ll also need to dress modestly outside the resorts, to respect the local culture.
4. Sun Protection
Whether you visit in the dry or wet season, you’ll always need sun protection in Tanzania. You don’t want a sunburn or sunstroke to put a downer on your trip, so bring a hat, polarized sunglasses and plenty of high SPF sunscreen.
7. Money Matters
When you travel to Tanzania with us, most of your expenses will already be covered including your accommodation, transport and some meals. However, there are a few things you’ll need cash for like souvenirs and extra activities. It’s best to come prepared with a mix of credit or debit cards and cash on your Tanzania packing list.
2. Day Bag
Whether you’re out on safari or cruising the islands of Zanzibar, you’ll need a daypack to carry everything you need including sunscreen, a water bottle and your camera. Bring a secure bag that’s lightweight and waterproof, and go for one with lots of pockets to keep your things safe and organized.
5. Toiletries
Everyone requires different toiletries, so this packing item is up to you. We do recommend pouring products like shampoos and moisturizer’s into reusable travel bottles, to save space and waste. You might also like to try solid toiletries, like bar shampoos, deodorants, moisturizer’s and toothpaste tablets.
8. Entertainment
Tanzania is a big country and you’ll likely experience some long journeys. There’s also usually some downtime during the hot midday sun on safari, and it’s the perfect time to have a nap, read a book, play cards, or listen to some music. Bring some headphones that block out the noise on planes, and an e-reader instead of a bunch of heavy books.
3. Comfortable Shoes
You’ll likely be doing a lot of walking in Tanzania, so you’ll need a comfortable pair of sneakers that you don’t mind getting dirty. If you plan to do any hiking or walking safaris, bring a sturdy pair of boots with good ankle support, and some thick socks. You’ll also need a pair of sandals or flip-flops for lounging by the pool or the beach.
6. Medical Kit
While most hotels, lodges and camps in Tanzania will have a first aid kit on hand, it’s always a good idea to bring your own essentials in a small medical kit. You should bring items like pain killers, antiseptic ointment and bandaids, hand sanitiser, electrolyte tablets or powders, strong insect repellent, eye drops and travel sickness tablets.
9. Binocular
Want to make the most of your safari in Tanzania? Bring a pair of binoculars! They’re fantastic for spotting wildlife lurking in the tall grasses, or birds flitting in the trees, and they’re sure to take your wildlife viewing experience to the next level.
How do I get to Tanzania?
