7 Days Kilimanjaro Climb – Machame Route

The Machame Route:  Machame route also known as the “Whiskey” route, is a six or seven day camping route and is most popular route on Kilimanjaro. The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the south, beginning with a short drive from Arusha to Machame Gate. The path leads hikers through the rain forest to Shira Plateau. Here, many of Kilimanjaro’s routes converge. Then the route turns east and traverses underneath Kilimanjaro’s Southern Ice Field on a path known as the Southern Circuit before summiting from Barafu. Descent is made via the Mweka route.Trekkers who take the Machame Route pass several well known Mount Kilimanjaro landmarks while en route, including the famed Lava Tower and Shira Plateau.

Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport – Arusha:

Welcome to Tanzania. On arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport you’ll meet your company arranged driver who will transfer you to Arusha city to Green Mountain Hotel for dinner and overnight. Our driver will display your name on Mupana Tours signboard. These procedures ensure that you are picked up by the correct driver, rather than by some of the airport taxi drivers who are looking for business. You’ll get a chance for Mountain trekking briefing/introduction before your dinner.

DAY 01: Arusha – Machame Gate – Machame Camp

After morning breakfast at your hotel around 08.00hrs, then start your safari heading to Machame Gate, which situated at 1,800 meters (5,905 feet) above sea level. As you ascend through the stunning landscapes, lush rainforests will gradually transition into heather moorlands. Your destination for the day is Machame Camp, located at 3,000 meters (9,840 feet) elevation. Prepare to be mesmerized by the breathtaking scenery and in this beautiful natural before overnight relaxation. Dinner will be served at 18.20 Machame Camp.

DAY 02: Machame Camp – Shira Cave Camp

Your path today is dusty, narrow and steep. After breakfast at 07.00hrs start your trekking from Machame Camp at 3,000m to Shira Camp at 3,840m. Enjoy breathtaking views on Kibo and Shira along the way and experience the thrill of ascending to higher altitudes. This leg of the Machame route will challenge and inspire you, making it an unforgettable journey on this stunning landscapes. Dinner will be served at 18.20 Shira Camp.

DAY 03:  Shira Cave Camp – Lava Tower  – Decent to Barranco Camp

Keep enjoying nice experience trekking on this Machame route. Trek from Shira Camp, situated at an impressive altitude of 3,840m, to Lava Tower standing tall at 4,630m. It is important to find your right pace, as this is a longer hike and you might feel a bit uncomfortable due to the increased altitude. Finally, descend to Barranco Camp at 3,960m at the foot of the imposing Barranco Wall. This day offers stunning views and a challenging but rewarding adventure. Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp.

DAY 04: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

After breakfast at 7.30hrs you depart from Barranco Camp to the Barranco Wall. Many climbers like this part of trekking. Because when you reach on top of  Barranco Wall, you have a spectacular view to the Kibo Volcano and Mount Meru.

Then you’ll have more difficult hike starts to reach Karanga Camp. This route has many ascents and descents, so keep the right pace. You have lunch at the camp and after a rest you can take an acclimatization hike in the direction of Barafu Camp.

DAY 05:  Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp 

After breakfast at 7.00hrs the hike start heading to Barafu Camp. This will be the starting point for your ascent to the Uhuru Peak – the top of Kilimanjaro! You will arrive at the camp around lunch. Have a rest and after you regain your strength, take an acclimatization hike to Kosovo Summit Camp (4800m) and back. Enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and experience the thrill of high altitude camping as you prepare for the final push to the summit around midnight. Dinner and overnight relaxation at Barafu Camp.

DAY 06: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Millennium Camp

Enjoy the nice view from the top of Kilimanjaro (Uhuru Peak). Around midnight you start from Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak. The climb leads over good trails and the most challenging part is the high altitude. Once you reach the summit you can enjoy a beautiful sunrise, which is quite impressive at this height! After a small time at the top, where you celebrate your ultimate triumph you descend slowly to the scenic Millennium Camp. Dinner and overnight will on Millennium Camp.

DAY 07: Millennium Camp – Mweka Gate – Arusha (Hotel).

After your breakfast at Millennium camp, descend down to Mweka gate. The Millennium camp is located in a tropical rainforest. When you wake up today, you will experience a pleasant feeling due to the reduction in altitude and the satisfaction of reaching the summit. Exit at Mweka gate ready for the transfer to Arusha direct to your hotel for dinner and overnight at Green Mountain Hotel.

Departure Day:

After breakfast from your hotel, the company driver will transfer you to the airport – Kilimanjaro International Airport where you’ll board your flight heading back to your lovely country.
